“My work
is a celebration of color…”
Nearly 4,000 years
ago, fused glass-rare among glass forming techniques-was created
in Egypt and Persia. The ancients valued it as semi-precious,
since it was a painstaking and difficult process. Repeated
cooling, cutting, layering and re-melting produce unique pieces
with incredible depth and variety.

Barbara’s
latest work is the creation of vessels, which combine
fusing with slumping flat glass in a kiln. Glass pieces
are cut to a design, with two or more layers of glass
fused together to form a whole. Once fused, each piece
is then re-fired and slumped over or into a mold to
achieve its final shape. The current “Collage” series
employs precise cutting to produce harmonious patterns;
depth is achieved by layering up to five colors of
glass, resulting in work combining hundreds of cut
pieces. |

Barbara uses kiln
carving, a technique whereby the glass is fused over a relief to
give the appearance of being carved. The technique of sagging is
also part of her artistic vocabulary. Here, gravity is used to shape
the molten glass. Fusers do not often use this process because it
requires a great deal of attention to the kiln and precision in the
melting process. The result is like blown glass, with an elongation
of patterns against a backdrop of translucent colors. |
